From the Desk of Paul Sciria

You don ’ t need a college education to know a few common Italian expressions or hold a brief conversation . I will admit I learned Italian at The Ohio State University and I will also admit that I never received an A in two years of studies . That seemed to be reserved for the non-Italians in the classroom . My Sicilian got in the way .
Permit me to offer you some easy expressions or lessons . Ready ? Here goes ! “ Buon giorno ” is our “ good morning ” and “ Buona sera ” is “ good evening .” “ Buona notte " means “ good night .” “ How are you ” is as easy as “ Come stai ,” and , if you ’ re feeling well , the response is “ Bene .” It ’ s always proper to say “ thank you ” or “ Grazie .” If you need to beg your pardon , try “ Scusa ” or “ Scusi ,” and “ Per Favore ” makes saying “ please ” very easy .
From the Editor & A Message from the Publisher
“ Prego ” is perfect for “ You ’ re welcome .”
In the classroom , the student needs to listen to the teacher and read . Maestro or Maestra ( male or woman ), “ Ascolta ” and “ Leggi ” cover that . If one is asked to go to the blackboard , it ’ s as simple as “ va alla lavagna ” and , once class is over and it ’ s time to leave , “ ciao ” will work . “ Ciao ” also works for “ hello ” and “ hi .”
The days of the week , I giorni della settimana , are important as well : lunedi ( Monday ), martedi ( Tuesday ), mercoledi ( Wednesday ), giovedi ( Thursday ), venerdi ( Friday ), sabato ( Saturday ), and domenica ( Sunday ).

Now close your books . “ Ora chiudete libri !” If you don ’ t get an A , don ’ t worry , neither did I !

If you have a passion for writing and are looking to help support our newspaper , please contact me at aspitalieri @ lagazzettaitaliana . com . We are especially looking for writers in the Akron , Youngstown , Columbus , and Pittsburgh areas . We know many of our readers would love to see more localized news .
We are also seeking commissionbased sales representatives in the above-mentioned areas . The paper continues to grow and we know that would not be possible without all of our loyal readers and advertisers .
We look forward to hearing from you , and Happy Thanksgiving !
