This series of women portraits has been completed through chance encounters during her stay in Tunisia. They are saleswomen, chambermaids or architects and have worn, for the photograph, one of the traditional Tunisian costumes that families or connoisseurs keep away d from the dangers of a social and political crisis. iana LUI is a French-Belgian of Malaysian Chinese origin photographer, artist and filmmaker. Because of the political and economical instability in her native country, her parents send her to Los Angeles where she studies for 12 years. She attends the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), then obtains in 1992 her degree in Fine Arts and Photography at the famous Art Center College of Design in Pasadena before moving to Europe in 1993. Diana LUI is represented in the most prestigious places in the world of photography. Her portraits have been exposed in 2003 at the International Festival of Photography in Ping Yao (3rd edition) in China and in Beijing at the Millenium Center for Contemporary Art. Diana Lui is the winner of the 20th Scholarship of Talent (2003, France) and selected for the Kodak Prize of Photographic Critic 2003. The quality of her photographic approach and her ability to express moments filled with intimacy also earned her to be selected for the HSBC prize of photography in 2008. From 2009 to 2012, she organizes personal and collective exhibitions, sees her works purchased by the public domain (BNF in Paris, Museo Bellas Arte in Caracas, Fine Arts museum in Canton...) and is regularly exposed or bought in the United States, in China, in England, in South-East Asia (Malaysia and Singapour), in Belgium, in Estonia, in Germany, in Mexico, in Venezuela and in France. Her most ambitious photographic project, started 20 years ago, consists of travelling all around the world with her 20x25 camera in order to make « intimate, psychological and anthropological » black and white portraits. She also uses ancient techniques such as the platinum/palladium noble process and the photoengraving for her portraits. The artist is presented by the Sponte Gallery since 2009.
