Mariem’s passion for material and colors have given an atypical
and luminous dimension to her work… she has revived the wool
cheesecloth, more commonly referred to as hayek.

iscreet and major figure, Mariem Besbes has revived the wool cheesecloth, more
commonly referred to as hayek. A piece of fine wool, hand-woven, takes you to
a travel through your senses. Worn by the Romans since antiquity, the purple
cheesecloth echoes our history and heritage.
Mariem’s passion for material and colors have given an atypical and luminous
dimension to her work. Her secret own recipes combine red carmins, purples, and
shades of saffron yellow, ochre and burnt sienna. Her universe is full of poetic
sobriety, without artifice. In her workshop, an old hatchery entirely transformed, Mariem crushes, grinds up,
sifts and kneads henna, madder and weld. From her palette of somptuous colors, she creates seductive
weavings appreciated by some major well-known companies such as Le Bon Marché and Hermès.
During conversations with former silk manufacturers, Mariem discovers a grandfather previously unknown to
her, who spent formative years in the famous Lyon silk trades around 1910. After that, he brings the basis of
modern weaving into Tunisia. The story continues today : the story of a passion for thread, color and light. I
