Le monde du Sultan : l’Orient ottoman
dans l’art de la Renaissance

La chute de Constantinople en 1453 marque un tournant dans l’histoire et la fin de l’empire byzantin. En occident,
la culture ottomane inspire et fascine par la splendeur et le faste de la vie à la cour des sultans. Dans la région du
Bosphore, lors des délégations, les artistes jouent un rôle crucial dans la création de l’image de l’autre à travers
leurs récits de voyage, leurs ouvrages sur les traditions vestimentaires et leurs œuvres d’art.
L’exposition illustre cette force d’attraction qu’exerçait l’Empire ottoman sur les artistes de la Renaissance.
« Le monde du Sultan » rassemble plus de 160 œuvres d’art et objets précieux datant de 1420 à 1620. I
The Sultan’s world, the Ottoman Orient in Renaissance Art. From February 27th to May 31st 2015 at
the Bozar Museum in Brussels. The fall of Constantinople in 1453 marks a turning point in history and the end of the
Byzantine Empire. In the West the Ottoman culture inspires and fascinates through the splendour and the pomp
of the sultans’ court. In the region of the Bosporus, during delegations, artists play a crucial role in the creation
of the image of the other through their travel stories, their books on clothing traditions and their works of art.
The exhibition illustrates this strength of attraction that the Ottoman empire exerted on the Renaissance
artists. “The Sultan’s world“ gathers over 160 pieces of art and precious objects dated from 1420 to 1620. I
