rand événement artistique et culturel, le Jeddah Art Week a vu le jour en 2013 sous le
patronage du Ministère de la Culture et de l’Information d’Arabie Saoudite et de l’Initiative Communautaire Abdul Latif Jameel. Cet événement a pour but d’encourager la
scène artistique en plein essor du monde arabe, en allumant l’étincelle des arts et de la
culture de manière ludique et inclusive.
Cette année, le Jeddah Art Week qui se déroulait du 30 janvier au 04 février a élargi son
programme en intégrant de nouvelles initiatives autour de l’art contemporain mondial.
Douze expositions sur les arts visuels modernes et contemporains ont été présentées durant la semaine. La
Tunisie était représentée par l’exposition “Mapping azimuth, two calligraphical ascencions” de Nja Mahdaoui
et Khaled Ben Slimane, organisée par la galerie El Marsa.
Exposition unique en son genre,
elle montrait une sélection
d’œuvres des deux artistes tunisiens les plus influents dont les
approches inspirées de la calligraphie arabe ont mis en place
un travail fortement imprégné de
spiritualité.
Auto-proclamé “chorégraphe de
lettres”, Nja Mahdaoui utilise le
script arabe dans une démarche
esthétique, sans jamais exprimer
le sens. Il a créé un flux rythmique, un geste mélodique qui
révèle la dimension artistique
pure de la lettre. Sa calligraphie
se réfère aux contemplations de
la beauté dans ce qu’elle a de

plus spirituel.
L’art de Khaled Ben Slimane
quant à lui se rapproche fortement de celui de l’alchimiste. Inspiré par l’héritage arabo-islamique et le savoirfaire ancestral de la poterie, son art intègre les formes et les signes de l’écriture arabe comme autant d’éléments mystiques à composer. Il séduit par son utilisation du script arabe traditionnel mais également par son
équilibre délicat entre spiritualité et forme visuelle.  I

mportant artistic and cultural event, the Jeddah Art Week was created in 2013 under the patronage
of the Ministry of Culture and Information of Saudi Arabia and the Abdul Latif Jameel Community
Initiative. This event is meant to support the flourishing art scene of the Arab world, by igniting the
spark of arts and culture in a fun and inclusive manner.
This year, the Jeddah Art Week used to take place from January 30th to February 4th. It has now
expanded its program, adding new initiatives around global contemporary art. Twelve
exhibitions about modern and contemporary visual arts have been presented during the week.
Tunisia was represented by the exhibition “Mapping azimuth, two calligraphical ascencions” by Nja Mahdaoui
and Khaled Ben Slimane, organized by El Marsa gallery.
This unique exhibition showed a selection of artworks by the two most influent Tunisian artists whose
approaches, inspired by Arab calligraphy, allowed a highly spiritual work.
Self-proclaimed “letters choreographer”, Nja Mahdaoui uses the Arab script for an aesthetic purpose, without
expressing the meaning. He has created a rhythmic flow, a melodic gesture which reveal the pure artistic dimension
of the letter. His calligraphy refers to the contemplation of spiritual beauty.
As for Khaled Ben Slimane art, it is very similar to the alchemist’s art. Inspired by the Arab-Islamic heritage and
the ancestral knowledge of potery, his art uses the shapes and signs of the Arabic script as mystical elements
to compose. It charms with its use of the traditional Arab script but also with its delicate balance between
spirituality and visual shape. I
