This unusual artist, born in 1970 in Tanger, shares his life between Tanger and Paris. Motivated by a fierce contempt for conventions, whether social, politic, linguistic or moral, Mounir Fatmi works for a reappropriation of the world. His installations are visual equations leading the visitor to the creation of a personal thought, away from any standardization. This goes through the desacralization and destruction of the structures surrounding us. For Mounir Fatmi, every material and ideological object can be used for creation. In one of his installations he reproduces the city of New York only by diffusing the sounds of the streets through speakers in a room. Language and more precisely reflection are at the heart of his work. Through supports as diversified as drawing, writing, sculpting and the installations, it refers to the origin and the reality of events. One thing is sure, Mounir Fatmi’s art is destabilizing, to the point of sometimes facing censorship. But it certainly won’t stop him from turning the world upside down and awakening consciences. His work has been selected in numerous biennial events and has received many prizes, such as the Cairo Biennial in 2010. I 97 I 55 ‫الغـزالــــة‬
