views of tunisia
The collection Surfaces has appeared like an obviousness to the photographer Matthieu Gafsou.
Hit by a sense of complete incoherence during his trip through Tunisia, this feeling guides
his objective in the remote villages of the south and the large cities of the north. Huge white
façades rising from a dusty and tumultuous land ; the solitude of a fragile tree surrounded by
urban areas… these are contradictions and contrasts that Matthieu Gafsou captures with his
camera. The pictures show a “clean demarcation line” between the modernism of the West
and the traditionalism of the East. Nevertheless, this tension is not temporal, it is not about a
victory of the present over the past but rather about multiple presents overlapping.
