Depuis 1992, date de la dernière grande
rétrospective française de l’artiste,
maintes expositions ont exploré l’œuvre
d’Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901)
à travers la culture de Montmartre. Cette
nouvelle exposition au Grand Palais
offre un panorama plus large. En effet,
si l’artiste a merveilleusement représenté
l’électricité de la nuit parisienne et ses
plaisirs, il a aussi traduit la réalité de
la société contemporaine dans tous ses
aspects, jusqu’aux moins convenables.
L’exposition montre ainsi à travers plus
de 200 œuvres comment cet aristocrate
du Languedoc, soucieux de réussir,
a imposé son regard lucide, grave
et drôle au Paris des années 1890. I

Grand Palais dedicates a large retrospective to
the artist known for his painting depicting Parisian
night’s world. Since 1992, the date of the last
retrospective ever given to the artist in France,
many exhibitions have sought to place the work
of Toulouse Lautrec (1864-1901), in the “Culture
of Montmartre”. By emphasizing the context
and folklore of the Moulin Rouge, the aesthetic,
poetic and even political aims of Lautrec have
disappeared from view. This exhibition of 200
works of art highlights three rejections influencing
the current vision of the Languedoc aristocrat and
clearing them: a certain disdain of the values of his
class, a neglected art market as well as a world of
