Von Mises y los problemas económicos de México
También, producto de su visita a México, es el ensayo “Problemas econó-
micos de México” escrito en 1943, en el que von Mises hizo una crítica a
la política económica del Estado mexicano emanado de la Revolución
mexicana de 1910. Este ensayo fue publicado por el Instituto Cultural
Ludwig von Mises en 1998 con un estudio introductorio de Carolina R. de
Bolívar. En el año de la publicación fungía como directora académica del
instituto, Josefina Vázquez Mota, destacada militante del Partido Acción
Nacional. Bettina Bien Greaves, sobresaliente alumna de von Mises, donó
a este instituto el texto que conforma esta publicación. Ella heredó los
documentos que el matrimonio Mises dejó al morir en su departamento de
Nueva York. Margit von Mises describe de la siguiente manera el lugar que
Greaves jugó en sus vidas. Dice:
[…] She first came to the seminar in 1951 and attended it to the last session,
not missing a single meeting. She is one of those rare individuals who com-
bine intelligence and metal curiosity with warmth and understanding of
human nature. With the passing of the years, she became a household word
with Lu and me. If there was any information Lu neended, any refreshing of
his memory, he would say, “Call Bettina” and surely enough she had the
answer. 20 Alter tour or five years in the seminar, Bettina took her seat next to
Lu, taking notes in shorthand —and no one would have dared to contest for
that seat. I spoke first to Bettina in 1952 during a seminar in California. At the
time she was still rather quit, hardly asking any questions, But, later, wor-
king with tremendous zeal, studying Lu’s book from beginning to end, rea-
ding them again and again, her inner security grew in relation to her
know­ledge. She wrote an excellent bibliography of Lu’s work, and for his
ninetieth birthday she catalogued —with my permission and without Lu’s
Knowledge— his whole library of about 6000 volumenes, to Lu’s greatest
surprise and delight. 21
Bettina Bien Greaves conocía muy bien la biblioteca de von Mises, mis-
ma que heredó a la muerte del matrimonio. Ello explica que encontrara los
documentos donde von Mises hace el análisis de la economía mexicana y
que conforman la publicación del artículo inédito de Mises sobre México.
En Problemas económicos de México, Ludwig von Mises objeta las medi-
das de política económica aplicadas por el presidente Lázaro Cárdenas
durante su gobierno. Estas críticas se centraron en: la intervención estatal,
