Born in Inglewood , California , Ron Escobar was two years old when his family moved to Guatemala .

He returned to the States at age nineteen to join the Marines , serving from 1989 to 1994 . “ I come from a humble background . My father just recently went back to school to get his high school certificate at the age of 78 .” Neither of Ron ’ s parents were supportive of his decision to enlist , as they wanted him to stay in Guatemala to help run the family business , but Ron was determined to create a better life . A female cousin of his had enrolled in the Marines and encouraged him to do the same .

Because the Marines requires all recruits to have the equivalent of a high school diploma , his recruiting officer asked a representative of the University of Southern California ( USC ) to review his Guatemalan high school records to certify that his education met U . S . standards . “ High school in Guatemala is actually more advanced than in most U . S . schools ,” notes Ron , “ So USC was
