Rolando Tuason from BCA ’ s Certification Outreach Regulations Enforcement ( CORE ) unit explained the importance of getting certified with the city before submitting bids . “ It would benefit you to familiarize yourselves with our [ certifications ] and apply for those you are eligible for sooner rather than later , and not wait until you are in the bid submission process ,” he said . “ It takes time to review these certifications with our limited staff members .” He provided educational aids to help contractors understand which certification is best for their company .
LADWP Management Analyst Jason Kim gave an overview of how to do business with LADWP . In his presentation , Mr . Kim spoke about contracts awarded to businesses in the past and encouraged contractors ’ participation . “ We awarded $ 1.2 billion in contracts for goods and services in 2020 . So , there are many opportunities in LADWP ,” said Mr . Kim . In speaking about procuring these contracts , he emphasized the importance of being certified by the City of LA .
Edward Han , a civil engineer with the Port of Los Angeles ( POLA ), zeroed in on upcoming construction projects . He explained how the POLA encourages the participation of small and very small businesses in the procurement process as well . “ The Port encourages small business enterprise ( SBE ) and very small business enterprise ( VSBE ) participation by including SBE and VSBE percentage goals as part of our contracts .”
It ’ s important to be certified with the City of Los Angeles to take advantage of the many opportunities small and diverse businesses have available at the city ’ s departments .
