LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Dear readers,

It is with great pleasure that we present to you this new edition of La Civetta. As you may have noticed, this issue’s front cover welcomes you with fantastic news: indeed, we are extremely proud to inform you that La Civetta has finally been awarded the "Best Specialist Publication - Highly Commended" by the Student Publication Association. We hope there will be more to come and that this award will motivate our fantastic team even further.

Issue 16 should be perceived as a small window into Matera, a city in the Basilicata region, which currently is the European Capital of Culture 2019, as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993. Matera, with its 10,000 years of history, is the third oldest city in the world, after Aleppo and Jericho, and one of the most visited places in Italy. This edition therefore aims to be a celebration of a magical and breathtaking location that everyone - especially those who really are into Italian culture! - should visit at least once in their life. In this issue, you will find a small introduction to this wonderful city, a local recipe and some pages dedicated to fashion in Matera.

Furthermore, alongside our usual array of topics, a new section has been introduced in order to share fun facts about the Italian language. If it is true that language reflects culture, the Lingua section aims to be a way to explore and share words and idioms typical of the Italian world.

Finally, we would like to once again thank the Design Team for the incredible work, our writers for the quality content and the Department of Italian for supporting us, as always.

ENJOY!

Elizabeth Tobyn
