LA CIVETTA May 2016 | Page 6

Dear Reader,

A very warm welcome back to the pages of La Civetta. A particular pleasure comes with publishing this issue, brimming as it is with variety, interest and hard work from all those who have contributed.

An especial welcome to the Erasmus students who have taken up the pen and written for us. From Arianna inviting you to explore the Dolomite town of Cortina d’Ampezzo to Cristiano’s fascinating piece on the recent events within the "unioni civili" movement in Italy, their work has been an invaluable asset to La Civetta’s offering this time around.

It is particularly gratifying to see that all of our section editors have approached this issue with just as much vitality and enthusiasm for producing great content that is both engaging and challenging; I think we can all feel very proud of what we have achieved.

It is an interesting time right now to be involved in European studies. With recent events in Brussels; the ongoing refugee crisis raging throughout the continent; the looming presence of political parties on the right and the fast approaching UK referendum to decide the country’s membership of the European Union, it seems as if what it is to be European and what it will mean in the future is being contested now more than ever.

Thank goodness there is us at La Civetta to show you all the wonderful things that come from sharing cultures and embracing difference. To which end, on behalf of everyone on the La Civetta team, I invite you all - whether at home, Italy or abroad - to enjoy the little window into the world of Italian delights and experiences that we have got in store for you. What better way to prepare yourself for the exam season?
