Editor ’ s Letter Lettera del Direttore Responsabile
Dear reader ,
I ’ d like to start by taking you back to August 2024 . I was spending my final Year Abroad placement in Rome and , one Saturday morning , I agreed to meet a friend on the other side of the city . Already flustered by the searing heat , I arrived at the metro station to find no train in sight , the entrance blocked by shutters and a large sign reading ‘ Lavori in corso ’ – ‘ Work in Progress ’. Those three words have become a defining feature of Rome , a city which has spent several years as a building site . Forget picture-perfect landscapes , I was instead following the rabbit holes of endless diversions , catching glimpses of ancient monuments shrouded in scaffolding .
The reason for such extensive works is that , this year , the Italian capital is hosting the Catholic Jubilee . Italy ’ s relationship with the Catholic Church is complex : the influence of the Vatican is waning but Italy ’ s reluctance to let go of Catholic traditions is holding back the progression of the nation ’ s psyche . The aim of this edition , and our theme ‘ Belief ’, is to consider the significance of the Catholic Jubilee and Italy ’ s multi-faith landscape . Our theme has taken on new meaning while we have been putting the issue together , not just through international focus on Pope Francis ’ s health but also the cinematic success of Conclave , a film aptly posing the question of ‘ What next ?’ when a pontiff dies .
Importantly , this edition does not pertain solely to Italy ’ s relationship with religion . We look at ‘ Belief ’ in a broader sense : it is central to Italy ’ s deep-rooted superstitions , its fervent sporting landscape and its culinary traditions . Unsurprisingly , faith is influential in Italian arts , the idolisation of icons and the country ’ s dark heart which binds it to fascism and criminality .
We hope this edition is as well-received as our December 2024 issue , which keeps breaking records . At time of writing , our last publication has the highest readership since May 2017 and is on track to become our most read edition of all-time . It has been recognised externally , with La Civetta receiving two nominations from the Student Publication Association for the 2025 national awards . The recognition pays testament to the work put in by our contributors and our passion to revitalise the magazine .
On a personal note , this will be my final edition working on La Civetta . Having contributed to every issue since May 2022 , our publication has come a long way since . In a way , ‘ Belief ’ has been my own raison d ’ être from the very start : a belief that Italian culture deserves to be celebrated and that , in a climate of university cuts , teaching foreign languages still has immense value .
I ’ d like to thank every member of the Italian department , who not only put their faith in me to lead La Civetta this year but also inspired me to further my love for Italian language and culture . Finally , a big thank you to everyone who has worked on this edition . Your work continues to spark interests in students and ‘ Bristalians ’ alike and it has been a huge pleasure collaborating with you all .
La Civetta is back where it belongs and I ’ m proud to have been a part of it .

Cari lettori ,
Il tema di questo numero si ispira ad una mia esperienza in agosto 2024 , avvenuta mentre trascorrevo il mio ultimo placement dell ’ anno all ’ estero a Roma . Un sabato mattina , ho deciso di ritrovarmi con un mio amico dall ’ altra parte della città . Già irritato dal caldo soffocante , sono arrivato alla stazione solo per vedere che non c ’ era alcun treno , l ’ entrata era stata bloccata dalle serrande , e le parole ‘ Lavori in corso ’ erano in bella vista su un cartello . Queste tre parole sono state protagoniste del mio periodo a Roma . Meglio quindi dimenticare l ’ immagine da cartolina di Roma : ogni percorso era caratterizzato da deviazioni e i monumenti erano nascosti da ponteggi .
È quindi lecito chiedersi il perché di così tanti lavori svolti nella capitale italiana . La risposta ? Il Giubileo Cattolico . Il rapporto tra l ’ Italia e la Chiesa Cattolica rimane complicato : da una parte il potere del Vaticano sta diminuendo ma dall ’ altra parte la riluttanza del Bel Paese di abbandonare le sue tradizioni cattoliche impedisce all ’ Italia di diventare più progressista . L ’ obiettivo di questo numero , e il nostro tema del ‘ Credere ’, è l ’ analisi dell ’ importanza del Giubileo e dell ’ identità religiosa del Paese . Tale scopo è diventato ancora più imprescindibile quando abbiamo cominciato a lavorare a questo numero , non solo a causa del focus internazionale sulla salute di Papa Francesco ma anche per il successo cinematico del film Conclave , il quale ci spinge a chiederci “ Cosa succede dopo la morte di un pontefice ?”
Bisogna sottolineare che questo numero non copre solo il rapporto tra l ’ Italia e la Chiesa Cattolica : prendiamo in considerazione anche l ’ idea del ‘ Credere ’ con un ’ ottica di più ampio respiro . Il credere si intreccia con la scaramanzia , con la passione per lo sport italiano e con le tradizioni culinarie . Non ci sorprende che la fede sia ben chiara per quanto riguarda la moda italiana , l ’ adorazione di icone e il volto oscuro della penisola che si collega al fascismo e alla criminalità .
Speriamo che questo numero avrà un impatto simile alla rivista di dicembre 2024 , la quale continua a battere i record . Mentre sto scrivendo questo commento il numero di lettori del numero di dicembre è il più elevato da maggio 2017 e potrebbe diventare la nostra rivista più letta di sempre . A questo si deve aggiungere che La Civetta è stata candidata a due premi nazionali dalla Student Publication Association , un riconoscimento che si deve a tutti coloro che hanno dato il loro contributo quest ’ anno .
A livello personale , questo numero rappresenta il mio ultimo in quanto direttore de La Civetta . Nel corso di quattro anni , ho scritto per ogni numero possibile e sono talmente orgoglioso di come e quanto la rivista si sia sviluppata . In un certo senso , l ’ idea del ‘ Credere ’ si è sempre inserita nel mio lavoro : credo che la cultura italiana debba essere celebrata e che l ’ insegnamento delle lingue straniere abbia ancora un forte valore .
Vorrei ringraziare tutti gli insegnanti del dipartimento italiano dell ’ università , non solo per avermi affidato la gestione di questo progetto innovativo , ma anche per avermi ispirato ad approfondire i miei interessi per l ’ italiano , rendendo la mia esperienza in quanto studente estremamente gratificante . Infine , ringrazio tutti quelli che si sono impegnati a partecipare alla Civetta per questo numero . Il vostro lavoro continua a scaturire l ' interesse dei nostri lettori ed è stato un vero piacere collaborare con voi .
