From what we have seen so far, under Parisse’s inspiring and imperious captaincy and O’Shea’s flair, the Italian attack seems a real threat. They are getting points on the board and making top tier sides look defensively weak as they run in well-crafted tries. But, their defence is still an Achilles’ heel. Discipline can be improved, and their fitness is always tested in the toughest situations. For Italy these are challenges they must rise to, so that they can become the squad they have the potential to be.

With strong contenders for the title England and Ireland out of the way, Italy have everything to play for in their next three games. France are the only other side with two losses and will like Italy be looking to make a statement about how they intend to continue this Six Nations. But, with no secure France will face heavy opposition at the Stade de France. Wales will prove to be tough opponents particularly with the passionate Welsh crowd away from home. But with many of their key players injured or unavailable, can Italy muster a surprise?
