In August 2015 I was full of excitement but also I felt apprehensive. My year abroad was due to start within a month and, like many, I was ready to embrace the challenge of speaking a new language and getting acclimatised to my new environment. I had just received confirmation, after an anxious wait, that I would be working at Mogliano Rugby, pretty much equidistant from Treviso and Venice.

I had always been keen to do a sporty sort of internship but I really had no idea what awaited me in Veneto and that was probably one of the main reasons for which I was anxious. The only thing that stood out for me was Venice!

I arrived in early September and got to know my host family in my first week. They really enforced the positive stereotype of Italians being delightful people, one of the reasons I chose to study the subject 4 years ago. The father was the vice president of the club and he introduced me to the personnel there – which often involved going for pizza for an extended lunch or a leisurely late morning breakfast. It really was fantastic.
