done “more to liberate women than many ” in 2017, and in that same year she was awarded the title of ‘gay icon’ at the World Pride in Madrid. Her boundary-breaking career transformed Italy forever, and her spirit is dearly missed.

Her death this summer, on the 5th of July, sparked a week of mourning in Italy. She was a household name in every Italian home, close to the hearts of thousands who lined the streets of Rome to mourn Italy’s loss. Described as “more applauded by Pertini, more expensive than Michel Platini, more miraculous than Padre Pio” by l’Espresso magazine in 1984, she was the definition of a pop legend, missed but beloved by Italy.
