When one thinks of artists from the Italian renaissance, names that spring to mind include Botticelli, Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo. Known collectively as ‘The Old Masters’, they do have one striking similarity, they are all male. The charity Advancing Women Artists was created to change this dogma, by ‘giving a voice to historic women artists.’ Through the painstaking restoration of works produced by forgotten Italian female artists, AWA has been able to showcase their achievements.
The charity selects works from the storage of some of the most prominent galleries and churches in Florence including Santa Maria Novella, the Uffizi and Pitti Palace. Nearly all of these works are in need of serious restoration and once complete go on display within Florence with the hope that they will never be forgotten again.
