free from gluten, so the only thing you need to avoid is the cookies and cream or other gluten-filled toppings. It’s definitely worth a visit, and I can thoroughly recommend the crema and amarena flavours!

Gluten-free or not, this gelateria is a must on any trip to Rome! Della Palma has been making gelato in the heart of Rome since 1978 and boasts an offering of 150 ice cream flavours. The store prides itself in producing artisan gelato in a wide range of flavours – there’s even a champagne ice cream – using natural ingredients which guarantee a high standard. Most flavours should be gluten-free friendly as, similar to the Old Bridge, the gelato base contains no gluten products. The store also stock gluten-free waffle cones, so you can eat ice cream to your heart’s content!

Mama Eat! @ Via di S. Cosimato, 7/9, Roma

Let’s get straight to the point, this is gluten-free heaven! Mama Eat! is simply incredible at what it does: providing great food for anyone with any food intolerances, be it gluten or lactose. On site there are two separate kitchens, two pizza ovens, and two different teams for preparing food. This means there is no possibility of cross-contamination. The menu offers a fantastic range of Italian classics that might not be possible to find elsewhere as a ‘free-from’ option. When I visited, I opted for arancini – five balls of rice stuffed with ham and cheese, coated in breadcrumbs and fried. This is definitely a go-to place when back in Rome! Not surprisingly, all staff were acutely aware of the importance of avoiding cross-contamination. Despite my broken Italian, I could enjoy an authentic Italian meal in the heart of Italy’s capital, confident that a gluten-free diet could be catered for.

Voglia di Pizza @ Via dei Giubbonari, 33, Roma

Out of all the restaurants and gelaterias I’ve tried in Rome, this is by far the best for an incredible gluten free pizza! The staff at Voglia di Pizza are extremely knowledgeable about gluten-free diets and they, like La Soffitta Renovatio, use a small flag to mark any gluten-free orders. All items on the menu are available as a gluten-free option, including five different gluten-free beers! As the only one in my group needing gluten-free, we put the pizzas here to the ultimate challenge: a “standard” vs. “gluten-free” taste test. The verdict? They couldn’t even tell the difference. That says a lot if you’ve ever tried gluten-free bread or dough!
