“I remember being your in the 60’s. We had a great sense of future, a great big hope. That is what is missing in the youth today.” - Bertolucci

Later on, in 2003, Bertolucci directed The Dreamers which recaptured the sense of 1968 in Paris. It is clear that this belonging to the era of ’68 was inherent to Bertolucci; it stuck with him from his first to his second last film. The Dreamers paid hommage to classical and New Wave cinema and carried with it a spirited ideal of freedom against political and class oppression. But like Before the Revolution’s protagonist Fabrizio, Bertolucci too had moved on from his rebellious ’68 days. Fabrizio returned to his bourgeois girlfriend Clelia and settled down for the rest of his life, despite being tempted Gina when he bumps into her many years later. So too, in a parallel narrative, Bertolucci foretold his cinematic future. The Dreamers is the temptation of a final fling with the ideas and emotions of ’68. He leaves widowed his second wife Clare Peploe.

Bertolucci was born 16th March 1941 and died 26th November 2018.
