Down and not out, the return of Silvio Berlusconi

Despite his many and varied disgraces ranging from tax fraud to sex scandals, Silvio Berlusconi returned to political headlines on November 5th with the results of the regional elections in Sicily. The announcement was a winning coalition forged from his centre-right Forza Italia and the two far-right parties, the Northern League and Brothers of Italy. Seemingly unperturbed by his recent heart surgery and critical outcries of corruption, the politician sometimes referred to as Il Cavaliere (the knight) has yet again demonstrated his insatiable instinct for power, still with a troubling side-helping of vulgarity. Addressing the Sicilian crowd, it appeared no topic was off-limits, reminiscing over jokes of sexual innuendos shared with Muammar Gaddafi on a previous tour of a migrant center.

‘Lurching from one unelected prime minister to the next’, Berlusconi’s comeback is no laughing matter for Italy’s unstable government. A return to the position of prime minister remains unlikely however, with current appeals against his ban from office doubtful to be resolved before the 2018 ballot. Even so, there is a ‘strong chance he could end up pulling the strings of power’, as disenchanted left voters, sceptical of Beppe Grillo’s Five Star Movement, swing to the right or simply choose not to vote.
