ITALY ON A BUDGET

TRAVEL: Getting around cheaply

Booking your airport transfer in advance is recommended, as it is often cheaper and secures you a seat. Coaches run between most airports and city centres (try the Terravision website) for around as little as €4 if you book beforehand.

On most major routes, Italy has different train options: the quick Freccia or the slower Regionale Veloce.

The Freccia is more time efficient, but much more expensive, whilst the Regionale Veloce is more economically efficient and although slower, very scenic.

Public transport in most Italian cities is reasonably priced (buses/metro), but it adds up! You can find maps in most tourist information points - walking is more interesting and often won’t take as long as you think it will!

Traveller’s tip: if you get tired of walking in Rome, head to the Villa Borghese, a villa surrounded by beautiful gardens where you can hire go-karts/segways/bikes to explore the grounds.

ACCOMMODATION: Be open minded when looking for a place to stay

The further in advance you book, the cheaper it is, (although it is advisable not to book everything in advance to allow some flexibility).

Anywhere right in the centre of any city will be expensive and usually flooded with tourists, so look around and experience the real Italy!

Don’t be afraid to stay in a shared dorm in a hostel, it’s an opportunity to meet people from all over the world.
