Another gorgeous attire exhibited at the 2018 Met Gala, also encompassing the themes of Catholicism and Italy, was Ariana Grande’s Vera Wang gown, paying homage to Michelangelo’s fresco, ‘The Last Judgement’, showcased on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, one of the most recognised religious paintings of all time. The gorgeous muted, pastel colours portray a beautifully soft, feminine impression to the gown, as well as the elegant sheer mesh overlaying fabric.

These two looks, alongside many others, are a clear indication of the Italian influence which was undeniably present when exploring the theme ‘Heavenly Bodies’. It is evident that the Vatican City played a central role from which designers were able to extract inspiration, highlighting the extremely important authority which Italy holds in terms of Catholicism.
