MET GALA 2018 -

"Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination"

Ever since 1946, on the first Monday in May, the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (more commonly known as the Met Gala) has taken place. Bringing together designers, models and celebrities, many extravagant fashion pieces are showcased, encompassing the specifically chosen theme for each gala. In 2018, Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief at Vogue, chose ‘Heavenly Bodies’ as the theme for the event, inspired by Andre Bolton’s exhibition, exploring the relationship between ‘Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’. Although some may say it was a controversial topic, some of the most intricate and beautiful looks which the Met Gala has ever produced were as a result of the Catholic influence behind each garment. With Catholicism being the central concept behind each look, it would be difficult to ignore the Italian influence which accompanied it.

This Italian influence is truly emphasised with Galliano’s Maison Margiela gown, custom-designed for Rihanna, embodying the papal style of the Vatican City. The mitre pretiosa, which Rihanna modelled, perfectly combines the religious theme alongside the eccentricity which is to be expected from each look at the Met Gala. Plus, with the mini dress and matching, elegant robe, an element of ironic femininity is included in the whole aesthetic of being the Pope; a role which women are not permitted to fulfil. This highlights the possibilities which arise through fashion; anybody is able to depict anything they desire - Fashion has no limits.
