In contrast to this, States of Mind I: The Farewells (1911) is a far more abstract painting focusing on trains. Few actual elements can be identified by the viewer - the clear ‘6943’ train number, an electricity transmission tower and geometric lines alluding to train carriages. All of these have modernism in common and represent industrial progress and thus Futurism. Beyond these elements are waves of movement and the view from the train of rolling hills and countryside. Together, a chaotic scene is created to represent the speed of machinery and trains and the progress of industrialisation.

Boccioni represents the varying history of Italian culture and art and therefore, whilst not a household name in the same way as Caravaggio and Da Vinci, he is arguably just a's important in forming a rich and diverse Italian culture.
