Education in the USA and Canada
Schooling is mandatory for all children aged six to 16 . Elementary school typically runs from Grade 1 to Grade 6 ( ages 6 to 12 ), and Grades 7 to 8 ( ages 13-14 ) are spent at a junior high or middle school . Grades 9-12 ( ages 15 to 18 ) are attended at a high school .
Community colleges
Community colleges provide a two-year associate ’ s degree program , often used as a springboard to a four-year bachelor ’ s degree at university . Community colleges have fewer admission requirements than four-year institutions .
Liberal arts colleges
A liberal arts college places emphasis primarily on undergraduate study , and can be private or public . Some also offer graduate programs in business administration , law , nursing and medicine .
Public universities
Commonly referred to as state universities , public universities are founded and operated by state government entities , receiving most of their funding from the state and / or federal government . Generally , they have statewide admission requirements and cost less than private universities .
Private universities
Private universities receive no governmental financial support . They are funded through faculty research grants , tuition fees and alumni donations . Students often choose private universities due to small class sizes , technological resources and research facilities .
