CULTURAL HERITAGE OF PRCANJ
The second chapter of the questionnaire puts the focus on the use of cultural heritage by its residents , the proposals for protection of certain areas of the cultural landscape , as well as the suggestions for restorations of some important buildings in Prcanj and finally , the identification of the risks and possibility of construction of a new motorway through Vrmac hill . In the last decade , Prcanj has suffered the irreversible destruction of cultural heritage , primarily of architectural one . Furthermore , the residents ’ connection with certain places of collective memories is vanishing . In addition to this , there is also destruction of cultural landscape by building tourist residences without anticipating its impact on the cultural heritage of UNESCO ’ s Natural and Cultural Region of Kotor . This questionnaire is aimed at raising public awareness about the significance of inherited identity of the cultural heritage of Prčanj , the importance of its valorization in accordance with the international common practice and above all , its utilization by the local citizens .
CULTURAL HERITAGE IN DANGER ? The respondents confirmed the claim and vision of UNESCO ’ s and Montenegrin experts of cultural heritage : Responses state that the cultural heritage in Prcanj is endangered , as stated by 92.3 % of those surveyed ( even “ extremely endangered ”, as stated by 23.1 %). To the question “ How much do State and Municipal institutions work towards protection of cultural heritage ?”, 61.5 % responded “ very little ” ( as a matter of fact , this is also due to the citizens ’ general indifference towards heritage values ). The next question asked “ To what degree is Prcanj endangered by indiscriminate building ?”; 93.8 % of respondents confirm UNESCO ’ s claim ; among these , 40 % think that Prcanj is “ very endangered ” and 15.4 % that it is “ extremely endangered ”.
ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE The following two questions : “ How many palaces in Prcanj are protected by the law ” and “ How many churches are usable ”, required the knowledge of some basic facts regarding the architectural heritage of Prcanj settlement . The answers vary . There are 5 palaces in Prcanj protected by the law . They are as follows : Tre Sorelle Palace ( 15th century ), Lukovic Palace ( 17th-18th century ), Beskuca Palace ( 18th century ), Verona Palace ( 18th century ) and Florio Palace ( 18th century ). The cause of confusion about the number of palaces probably lies in the fact that the respondents included other houses of great significance which are not palaces . These are as follows : house of Andrija and Filip Lukovic ( 16th century ) and house Lazzari ( 16th century ), including some other very important ones such as house of Lovrijenac Sbutega ( 17th century ) with Baroque balustrade at the angle and the house of Ivo Visin ( 18th century ), who was the first Master who circumnavigated the world under the Austro- Hungarian flag in the period from 1852 to 1859 . There are 9 important residential buildings in Prcanj in total . The question as to how many churches in Prcanj are usable ( which means that they are not ruins and that they are visited at least once a year by churchgoers ) produced various answers . 61.5 % of respondents stated that there are 5 of them in total . However , in Prcanj there are 7 usable churches . These are as follows : Church of St . Anna , Glavati ( 14th century ), Church of Our Lady of Carmel in Lukovic Street ( 17th century ), Church of St . Nicholas situated in front of sea promenade ( 18th century ), the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary or Our Lady ’ s Temple in the centre of Prčanj ( 18th - 20th century ), Church of St . Johan - ambient district of Giurovic family ( 13th – 19th century ) , Church of St . Anthony of Padua in Riviera ( 17th – 19th century ) and the only orthodox church : Rotunda of St . Peter Cetinjski at the graveyard ( 20th century ). There are other churches in Prcanj but they are in ruins : Church of St Peter in the hill ( 18th century ), Old Parish church of Prcanj in the hill ( 17th – 18th century ) and the ruins of the exroman basilica from 4th – 9th century dedicated to St . Tome , which is located on the private estate and it is not accessible to the public . There are 9 churches in Prcanj in total , including the ones in ruins , out of 18 which used to exist or are mentioned in the archive documents .
