Fishing with Mike Heath, his son Nick Heath, Duane Serck and Greg Kos I felt like one lucky gal. I had front row seats fishing with a group of guys that I highly respect and made me feel like I was fishing with my brothers. They respect the sport and the fish as much as the other fishermen. The combined wealth of knowledge these men hold is truly amazing. When Duane and Greg aren’t fishing; Duane Serck (left) is a Pro Staffer with Sinister Tackle ~ Home of the Natural the new generation of glider, Muskie guide, founder of illinoismuskies.com and a tournament Bass angler. Greg Kos (right) is owner of Red Eye Custom Bait Finishing, a Sinister Tackle Pro Staffer, Muskie Innovations Pro Staffer, Muskie guide and a tournament Bass angler. They told stories of each other’s catches and many of the practical jokes they have played on each other over the years and yes, they even played a couple of jokes on me with Mike and Nick. Mike Heath (left) is superintendent of the linemen for North Central Power - the area power company, a guide staff coordinator and manufacturer lure rep for Renegade Lures, a Pro Staffer for Sinister Tackle, a rep for Evinrude and St. Croix Rods as well as a Chippewa Flowage Area Muskie guide. Mike fishes in many tournaments also covering the Midwest. Nick Heath (right) is the quarterback of his high school football team and an avid fisherman like his father, although I think Nick likes spending time with his dad more than catching fish. Mike talks about Nick’s many big fish he’s caught over the years with pride. Nick tells about getting his buddies interested in fishing too. One of the main things this tournament promotes is getting everyone involved in a tradition, building relationships that last a lifetime and enjoying the great outdoors. There are many stories that talk of “monster” Muskies throughout both Minnesota and Wisconsin and several have claimed to be record holders. Landing a Muskie large or small is an experience all its own and typically includes a very good “fight” before you can get the Muskie reeled in and safely landed. Muskie fishing is a sport with challenges and rewards, but mostly rewards. Whether you are a casual fisherman or a professional sportsman, the Last Frontier Muskie Tournament offers something for everyone. The tradition lives on year after year and stories grow through the experiences of all. Most of the fish caught are documented and released although it is not required as long as they meet DNR requirements. There are two tournaments held yearly, one in the fall held the third weekend of September and one in the spring held the second weekend in June.
