FEATURED EVENTS
What does being ‘environmentally responsible’ mean and is it enough to prompt a paradigm
shift towards active citizenship for sustainability by both educators and children? How can
we create a new era of the ECOcene where ethical world views and collective participatory
change prevails? This keynote will challenge and extend understandings about working
towards sustainable futures in early childhood services and offer illustrative exemples of
practice.
CONCURRENT SESSIONS
MORE THAN OBEDIENT RECYCLERS: EXPLORING PEDAGOGIES FOR SUSTAINABILITY
Dr Sue Elliot
In this workshop we recognise that children must be more than ‘obedient recyclers’ if we are
to realise a generation of critical thinkers and problem solvers. Educators have a key role to
play and this session will explore pedagogies for sustainability including identifying everyday
dilemmas for discussion. Specific links will be made to the NQS, EYLF and international
UNESCO policy documents, and illustrative examples will be included.
ENOUGH FOR ALL FOREVER: DEVELOPING AN ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE
PHILOSOPHY
ECEEN
This session will explore the development and implementation of an environmentally
responsible philosophy involving children, families, educators and the wider community.
OUT THE GATE WITH CONFIDENCE
ECEEN
In this session participants will unpack the risks and benefits of venturing outdoors and
into unfamiliar surroundings as regular excursions. We will investigate assessing the site for
benefits and risks and for building in learning opportunities.
EVERYDAY SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION
KU Children’s Services
In this session participants will be challenged to build a ‘vision’ for sustainability. This vision
will inform action plans, initiatives and everyday practices for sustainability.
This day is suitable for all early childhood professionals.
Completing Inside Outside: Nature Pedagogy and Sustainability in Action will contribute 4
hours of NESA registered PD addressing 2.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for
Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.
