SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHS (STEM) STEPPING INTO STEM: A SERIES OF PROFESSIONAL LEARNING SESSIONS (THREE PART SERIES) Presented by Dr Kate Highfield & Laure Hislop, KU Professional Learning Consultant SESSION 1 Session 1: 31 May CODING & ROBOTICS, FINDING THE T IN STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING & MATHEMATICS) Session 2: 20 June This session acts as an introduction to STEM and focusses on robotics as a tool to engage children in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The hands-on session will focus on developing habits of mind and engineering habits of mind. Designed for all levels of experience this session will help you understand robotics and the ‘kindy coding’ movement from a play-based perspective. 4:00pm – 6:30pm SESSION 2 NQS Area 1 Session 3: 2 August Sydney – City $290 (Three sessions) TECHNOLOGY & CREATIVITY, ADDING THE ARTS TO STEM Creativity and the Arts are an essential part of children’s worlds, although often we see this as the opposite of Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). This hands- on session focuses on STEAM (adding the Arts to STEM) and looks at how technology can enable children as creators, create an audience and extend learning, play and creativity. By integrating music and creative arts to STEM we will explore how rich integrated learning can be. SESSION 3 IS THERE AN APP FOR THAT? AN EXPLORATION OF APPS IN LEARNING & PLAY Mobile and tablet devices have changed the way children engage with technology. However, with so many thousands of Apps in the App Stores finding quality tools and resources can be challenging. This session focuses on Apps for STEAM and ways we can use touch devices to enable play-based learning, problem-solving and creativity. The session goes ‘beyond the screen’ and suggests ways we can use technology to promote and extend play, both digitally and in the real world. The final part of this session will become a ‘Celebration of Learning’ where participants from the three part series will be invited to share stories of their developing practice and ideas. Whilst this course is NESA registered, all early childhood professionals are welcome to attend. Completing Stepping into STEM: A Series of Professional Learning Sessions will contribute 7 hours of registered PD addressing 2.6.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW. www.ku.com.au Page 13
