girls are more affectionate, hardworking and real assets to the family. They do not get easily involved in fights or adopt bad habits which boys mostly pick up. Almost in every respect, they are more trustworthy, honest and sincere. At home, they assist their mother in all the household works, they care and share the feelings and burdens, and they have a natural interest in Art and music. What more do parents want? The obsession of parents for boy-child baffles me. Let me assure them girls at home are much a greater asset than boys and are more likely to take care of their parents than the sons who generally turn out to be selfish. While I was working as an ad-hoc Lecturer, I was blessed again with a daughter. During the interview for a permanent job in my case, the proverb “There is many a slip between cup and the lip” once again came true. But, despite all odds, this time God was there with me, who personally blessed me in the shape of my daughter and within six months of her birth I finally got a permanent job. The birth of my first daughter got me a house of my own and my second daughter’s birth was followed by a permanent job. Life has been a rollercoaster ride since then. The decision not to join outside Delhi also proved ‘right’ as my services in Delhi would not have been counted there for seniority as they did in Delhi. Promotions too came very quickly. After two years I was upgraded to the post of Sr. Lecturer and promoted to Lecturer in the selection grade subsequently. At one point of time, I was being told that girls are a ‘curse’, but my experience made me feel that it is not true at all. Therefore, my message to everyone on this Earth is to ‘Save the Girl Child’ and ”Never kill a girl before she borns”. If female infanticide continues at the pace that it is today, I do not have an iota of doubt that we and we alone will be truly responsible for bringing the world to an untimely end. Today our family is well settled in Delhi and the credit for this goes entirely to my two daughters. Today, I believe that 11
