About speaker: Tom Tran entered a PhD program at UCLA in Asian Languages and Cultures
with a specialization in Korean studies. His dissertation research was on the cultural effects of
urbanization in Jeju Island after 2001. As a specialist in Jeju's urban history, he was periodically
invited to give guest lectures for local cultural organizations. Before his PhD, he worked in
Korea for 3 years as an EFL teacher in both Namhae and Jeju. He entered the Taego Buddhist
Order in 2012 as a lay minister.
