Background

Ko Koh Village is located in the Svay Chek District, Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia. The vast majority of the population is dependent on subsistence farming for their livelihood. The area has a population of 4,000 and is home to 900 households.

Ko Koh Primary School consisted of five buildings, one of which was made of wood. The wooden building was in very poor condition. The rainwater ran through the gaps between the slats and holes in the walls, causing intense foundational and structural damage. The dilapidated building was on the verge of collapse. The result was a learning environment that was neither comfortable nor motivating. The entire building was beyond repair and a safety and health risk to the students and teachers. The students needed a positive learning space where they could meet their full potential and find joy in learning.
