"Typical" scientist
Pregl was a typical scientist at the turn of the
20 th century: a hard-working, modest, individu-
alist who remained single and completely dedi-
cated himself to science. But he was not self-ab-
sorbed. He liked to spend time with and share
his knowledge and experience with curious and
diligent students, and as dean and chancellor he
endeavoured to improve students’ standard of
living.
