Depression

Depression is one of the commonest psychiatry morbidities having diverse range of symptoms. The word "Depression" is synonymously used with "Stress", but this is not true, Stress can be an important cause of depression but it is not a disease or abnormality itself.

When we say someone suffering from "depression" that means that he/she having some bodily symptoms as well as some psychological symptoms. These symptoms should be severe enough to cause disturbance in routine activities, education, interpersonal relations, and occupation.

Psychological Symptoms are;

* Sadness: He usually remain sad or irritable

* Decreased in life and daily activities, for example the activities, which were previous, joyful are no more enjoyable now. Life and work is boring

* He can feel inferior, can be hopeless

* He can have thoughts of suicide

Physical Symptoms are:

* Patient can feel lethargic, after minor physical or mental work

* His sleep can be disturbed; the most important thing about sleep is he doesn’t feel fresh after getting up from sleep

* His appetite can be decreased, resulting in decreased food intake, constipation, weight loss

* Females can have menstrual abnormality

* Patients can have decreased libido and other psycho-sexual disturbances

What cause Depression?

* Stressor such as lack of emplacement, work load, stress of studies etc .

* Inter-Personal conflicts, marital conflicts.

* Lack of social support, having no one to confide in.

* Un-Healthy lifestyle, irregular eating and sleeping habit .

* Genes: Sometimes no cause is found. There are some genes that cause depression.

Some tips to tackle Depression:

* Regular Exercise: Regular Exercise the best way to tackle depression.

* Remember exercise Releases "feel good" chemical in brains. You must be familiar with quote " A sound mind is always in sound body.

* Make a routine for sleep.

* If you have major event or stress don’t keep it to yourself, share with someone you trust.

* Take regular diet.
