here's a misconception

about LinkedIn and

that is you should only use it if you are looking for a new job.

To move your career forward in this day of wide social media, it's necessary to get as much exposure as you can and LinkedIn offers you certain advantages you probably haven't thought of. Let's explore a few:

1. Gives you a professional presence in the community.

An LI profile establishes you as a professional. Anyone curious about your credibility need only to look you up to be satisfied you are who you say you are.

2. You can be chosen for speaking engagements you probably would not have otherwise received.

Associations, clubs, professional entities, events, businesses and more seek speakers all the time and simply do not know where to find them. They now turn to LI to find experts. Imagine someone who might need a paralegal to explain the inner workings of the court system or how to reach certain agencies - who better than a paralegal? If you're listed, you'll get found. One more kudo on your resume.

3. Magazines and book publishers are always seeking authors. It's not that easy to find experts to write an article or a book. Perhaps you have an expertise in trust & estate planning as a paralegal and can write an article for a magazine or blog. Or, maybe you can write a book for a paralegal school on how to prepare trial exhibits, organize documents and assist attorneys at court. What better place than LinkedIn to list your talents.

4. The best candidates are those that are not seeking jobs. You might not be seeking a new opportunity now. However, you never know what comes up. An employer may be looking for a paralegal with your skills and abilities and tap you with an incredible opportunity. You explore it and suddenly, you're in a new job, huge bump up in salary and awesome responsibilities. You just never KNOW.
