KNOW, the Magazine for Paralegals Summer 2014 | Page 19
In Conclusion
So here we are with two different models
on two different coasts. The Court Navigator Program in New York sounds similar to
California’s Unlawful Detainer Assistant and
Legal Document Assistant options, except
the practitioners are either volunteers or
paid by a public agency instead of independent contractors.
Washington’s LLT program ramps it up
greatly, allowing non-lawyers to give limited legal advice. What will California’s Task
Force come up with? And will other states
get on board? Only time will tell.
