One of the best ways to get connected with your new city is to serve . During these challenging economic times , when giving might be hard , your time is even more valuable . Volunteers strengthen the community , and the River Region has many causes worth checking out . Here are a few of Elizabeth Williams ’ top picks :
4 Fix a fence , or read to a class . Volunteers are welcome at River Region schools that are being hit with funding issues .
5 Bring smiles to pediatric patients at Baptist Health . Bring a stuffed animal or activity book to a patient in the pediatric unit who needs a boost .
1 Adopt a horse for the day . MANE provides safe and effective therapeutic horseback riding opportunities to tri-county area children and adults with emotional , physical , cognitive , and developmental disabilities . Help groom and feed horses , or assist with leading a horse during child therapy .
2 Take three kids on a fun adventure . The Brantwood Children ’ s Home in Montgomery is a place for kids ages 10-21 from families broken beyond repair . All are available for adoption and looking for a loving home . Spend an afternoon taking a few kids to bowl , see a movie , or catch a ballgame .
3 Serve the homeless and hungry . The Salvation Army and the Rescue Mission provide lunch , clothing , and housing to those in need .
