It's been almost four decades since the last time a Notre Dame football team has played to be called the best in the state of Texas.

Despite freezing weather and a juggernaut of an opponent, the Knights proved that a team is always better than individual talent with a 68-45 victory over North Central Texas Academy.

The Pioneers came into the game riding the season-long performance of runningback Mekhi Heyman. Heyman amassed more than 3,000 yards and 73 touchdowns coming into the meeting with the Knights. Notre Dame knew it would have its hands full trying to contain the bruising back.

But the Knights stepped up on special teams and defense, reeling off 27 straight points late in the game to advance to the school's second ever football state final.

Skyler Whitten led Notre Dame's attack with 286 yards and six touchdowns. Knights coach Don Carlson also named Devin Quintero, Jake Abernathy, Clayton McElroy, Jack Trivette, and Sam Ozier as other standouts in the contest.

The Knights face off against San Marcos Hill Country Christian on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 11 a.m. for the TAPPS 6-man Div. III State Title.
