BUDGET-BEATING tips for centrepieces

FLOWERS, ALTHOUGH ENDLESSLY BEAUTIFUL, ARE A COSTLY ADDITION TO YOUR BUDGET LIST. CONSIDER THESE OPTIONS TO INCORPORATE THEIR BEAUTY WITHOUT SACRIFICING TOO MUCH CASH.

1.Vases with narrow openings: To save money on the amount of blooms you need to fill every vase, go for stunning vases with room for just a single bloom at the top.

2.Go monochromatic: Single colours have a huge impact. For bold looks, have two or three cheaper types of flowers, in the same colour, to make a statement.

3.Use leaves: A single flower and one oversized leaf, floating in water in a bigger vase is dramatic, but cost effective.

4. One height: Does your budget only allow for cheap flowers? No problem! Have them all cut the same, short height, and arrange them in hired glass / distressed / aged metal boxes, running allow the length of the table.

5.Divide and conquer: Back on single flowers vases – group them together on a table. Add candles and greenery and you have a masterpiece.

6.Pare down where flowers are displayed: If money is really tight, only have flowers in a few critical areas. Use your church bouquet at the main table, have some in the entrance, even use church aisle flowers at the food tables or in the restrooms. Fill the other tables with vases, hurricane lamps etc., or just float candles.

7.Float ‘em: Simple, elegant and classy – fill glass or acrylic troughs with water and float cut flowers in them. Place stones, greenery or moss around them, and you are done.

8.Your bouquet: One type of flower, one colour, one ribbon, one embellishment. Place the flowers in your hand so that they are all the same heights. Secure the stems with tape. Wind ribbon around the stem, pin it to secure it, and finish off with something pretty like your Grandma’s brooch, or some pearls.

9.In fashion = cheaper: Colours that are popular are easier to find and thus cost less.

10.Single wins: Use your chair covers, tie-backs and table runners to provide the most colour. Place a candelabra in the centre of the table, and only place a single flower on each napkin. Petals scattered over the table complete the look.

11.Tables don’t have to match: Only decorate every second table with bouquets. Alternate tables can be decorated with vases with single blooms floating in them.

12.Use fruit: Fruit is so versatile. Leave it whole and use it in bouquets, slice it and use in vases with flowers, or spray it gold, silver, bronze , or even snow spray it to give it a sugar dusted look.
