Klerksdorp Weddings #3 January 2014 | Page 15

Surely everybody wants to get married in the traditional spring/summer wedding season? That’s just one reason to think about a colder weather big day.

Actually there are several: the best venues, bands, churches, and even friends are often booked a year or more in advance for Spring / Summer weddings.

So marry in Autumn or Winter and you’ll have more chance of getting who and what you want (and may pay rather less than when demand is highest!).

Autumn and winter colours are anything but cold! Autumn and winter leaves can form a beautiful part of your bouquet, or replace it entirely in a wreath – a symbol of eternity after all; likewise wintry whites and silvers, perhaps with a touch of evergreen. Seasonal colours fit the men too – plain autumnal yellow ties look great, or wintry silver ones.

Autumn and Winter décor is a vibrant collection of rich warm tones - there is no reason for these weddings to be drab! Think of gorgeous chocolates, rich aubergines, striking golds, reds and rusts, yellows, oranges and beige. Or go Winter White and silver! Create your own winter wonderland with everything white … think sprayed branched with fairylights, mirrors, crystals … all with the accompanying fireplace and candles to warm the air and give a glow to your atmosphere.

At the reception cater for cold by having warming drinks ready for your guests and yourselves: sherries, ports and gluwein for those who enjoy a glass, cocoa and marshmallows or herbal teas for the younger generation.

It’s great to have some hot snacks before the sit-down bash too – everyone loves tiny pies, spicy samoosas, , or (so simple) small baked potatoes with butter, and mini meatballs in a hearty bolognaise sauce just screaming for a toothpick to keep and pick them up.

Serve your starter in different way – have a soup bar! Pots of hot, steamy soups, with accompaniments of croutons, crusty bread, cheese, cream … perfect for a cold night.

One of the best things about winter receptions is that you have a licence to serve all the heavy, hearty, comfort food we all love in winter. There’s no excuse of “It’s too much for a summer meal”. The pasta’s, the curries, the gravies, the starches, the vegetables with their rich creamy sauces, the meat … And of course, dessert! No meringues and berries on this menu! Baked puddings, whipped creams, rich sauces … what a delight!

So embrace the time of year rather than pretend it’s summer. You’ll be prepared and the day will be all the more memorable if it stands apart from the four summer do's your guests may have attended earlier in the year.
