Finding New Zealand’s
future stars
Do you know an exceptional young kiwi
the rest of the country should meet?
They could be a talented inventor, kapa
haka expert, rising sports star or master
debater. Perhaps they are a gifted
musician, maths prodigy or an ecowarrior. They will be aged 18 and under
and have a story that needs to be told.
Naturo Pharm homoeopathic
remedies are available from all
good pharmacies and health stores.
Naturo Pharm is delighted to be working
with and supporting Parents Centres
throughout New Zealand. To learn more

By understanding basic
steps about being
safe, the life the child
saves may be their
own – and I believe
that makes them
heroes, too. Little Life
Savers was launched
at New Plymouth on
Saturday 6 April and in
Wanganui on Saturday
11 May. A Wanganui
trust has enabled us to
be able to give away
a copy to every preschool in Wanganui/
Rangitikei and others
trusts may follow suit.
Preschoolers can be life savers
As a mother of twins, I was frustrated by the lack of
books available to teach my preschoolers how to take
care of themselves, and others, in an emergency. The
prevailing wisdom was that preschoolers were too young
to understand safety messages. I disagreed. Before our
boys were two years old, they were introduced to fire
drills as part of the household routine. They knew what to
do when the smoke alarm went off. They have grown up
knowing that the phone isn’t a toy, what constitutes a real
emergency and how to contact the emergency services.
If most accidents happen in the home, there is a high
statistical probability that a young child will have to react
to a home emergency, especially if it involves the main
caregiver.

Whatever their special skill; Maori
Television wants to hear about these
amazing young New Zealanders. We
are on the hunt for rising stars from
kindergarten through to high school to
take part in Matariki Magic, a two-hour
spectacular that will be screened live on
Maori Television.
To help parents and caregivers educate preschoolers
on how to stay safe, I have written Little Life Savers at
Home. The book uses simple, non-threatening language,
and delightful illustrations by Alan and Dennis Poole. It
demonstrates three situations: the collapse of a caregiver,
a fire and an earthquake. The last section has advice and a
series of questions for the parent, teacher or caregiver to
enhance the learning experience.

‘Treat others how you’d like to be
treated yourself’, ‘Brush your teeth
properly’, ‘Don’t try to change others,
change yourself’
These could be mantras from our own
childhood, but ChildFund New Zealand
collected these truisms from mums
in developing countries. A host of
well-known Kiwis also shared advice
imparted by their mums and created
an online campaign called ‘Pearls
of Wisdom’. Many of these familiar
faces share common quotes with
parents from Sri Lanka, Vietnam and
Zambia showing that maternal wisdom
transcends geographical borders.
Journalist and media personality
Miriama Kamo, says her mother tells
a tale of hearing, “When you get to
Heaven, God’s first question will be
‘So, did you have fun?’ “When times
get tough, this funny little thought
reminds me that life is a gift and we
should appreciate and respect it”, says
Miriama.
