Maori-based waenanga a first for childbirth
education in Taupo
Taupo Parents Centre has developed a
Childbirth Education class especially for
Maori by Maori, to provide an informative,
relaxed and culturally inclusive experience
for expectant parents.
The Centre has been running Childbirth Education
classes to Taupo families for over 30 years. Meeting the
needs of Maori in the community has been seen as a
significant opportunity and one which, with the right
expertise and advice, the Centre could facilitate.
Aptly named Rangiatea, which means “Seed from
Heaven,” it is the start of something new in the district.
Says Centre President Catriona Eagles, “Rangiatea is
a collaboration betweeen Taupo Parents Centre and
many organisations throughout the community – Taupo
Maternity, Lactation Consultants, local Maori and the
District Health Board. We have focused on developing
a relaxed, open discussion group, with key experts to
inform expectant parents and answer questions.”
