Quick – get the
midwife!
It is likely that everyone reading Kiwiparent
magazine has come under the care of a midwife
if their baby was born in New Zealand. We are
fortunate to live in a country where we have
an internationally respected maternity system
and midwives are key to delivering the national
maternity quality and safety programme.

The majority of women experience birth
as a normal life event. However as we see
more and more complexities in health care,
midwifery has had to respond to ensure
mothers and their babies have the skilled
hands and knowledge needed to pick up
problems or concerns and ensure additional
care is provided when it is needed the most.
One of the ways midwifery has made sure
mums and their families receive the care they
need is through increasing student midwives’
education and experience in hospitals. New
graduate midwives have a programme which
ensures they have access to experienced
midwifery mentors and are integrated into
the workforce to make sure all mums have
confidence in their midwife.
So we decided to ask two recently qualified
midwives a few questions about their new
careers as they shoulder the responsibility and
rewards of assisting families to deliver the
next generation of Kiwis.
