torso , so the jacket was bunching up and the rain flap was getting twisted open . I just have to make sure that part of the jacket is folded downwards so water can ’ t pool . The D30 armour is comfortable and barely noticeable . There ’ s a pocket for a back protector . The cuffs are generous , which is good for getting over big gloves . If it ’ s cold and I ’ m wearing small gloves with heated grips ( my preference ), wind whistles up the arms and makes my ‘ pits cold .
THE LOWDOWN If you want a handsome , retro-styled jacket , but want the security of a modern bit of kit I think the Edale delivers . It ’ s kept me dry and warm in the cold and wet ( once I figured out I have a stumpy torso ), and is even pretty good in the heat of summer with the Outlast liner removed . After 10 months of year-

round riding it ’ s still in perfect condition ( well , apart from the dirt , but I like that look ) and is the jacket I grab for most rides . More than that , it looks killer cool . My dad would have loved the Merlin Edale .
