limits are limits and laws are laws . And roads are roads . For they may not have visible teeth but they can certainly bite . They ’ ve nibbled me on a few occasions . One thing I have noticed in recent times is the state of some sections of our country ’ s motoring pathways . It may be my imagination , or advancing age , but they don ’ t seem to be as good as they were a few decades or so back . There are some very worn stretches about . Around some of the streets in my neck of the woods motorists get to play a new game from behind the wheel , or handlebars . Called “ spot the pothole ”. He or she who spots the most potential ruiners of a drive ( or an axle or whatever ) wins a Sherman tank . For these growling iron-tracked brutes happily give the errant potholes the finger , And I ’ m not talking little finger ... are you with me ? Mr dear late father piloted a Sherman tank up through the shattered terrain of northern Italy in early ’ 45 and his only droll note from those dreadful times , in terms of terrain , was “ oh we had a few moments ”. As I daresay many people across our roadway terrain of these times do . It seems to me that road works today are not so much solutions but patch-ups . There was a great stretch of open highway sealing carried out south of here about five years ago and pithing three years parts had started to unravel ... so the patch-up campaign was quickly re-ignited . Is it the bitumen we use or is it the increased amount of heavy transport vehicles out there now that they basically shoved rail transport into the sidings ? Those ribbons of highway and urban roads just don ’ t seem to cut it any more , which is another reason that when MV Agusta delivers that one litre beauty to me I ’ ll be treading more carefully than ever ... as you just don ’ t know what could be around the corner today .
