furious . After Turner had moved to BSA at the end of the 1950s , production racing featured high on the list of priorities at Triumph . In 1958 Mike Hailwood and Dan Shorey won the Thruxton 500 miler , Britain ’ s first such endurance race , on a Tiger 110 . motorcycles . This may seem surprising as Edward Turner , designer of the original Speed Twin in 1937 , was opposed to racing . In 1946 Ernie Lyons , with the assistance of the Triumph factory , won the Senior Manx Grand Prix on an almost stock Tiger 100 , but only because Turner was overseas and didn ’ t know about it until he returned . NORTON FEATHERBED Moving to another classic British bike in 2010 , this time a race bike . In 1950 , Geoff Duke signed for the Norton works team , and took the new Featherbed framed Norton to its first victory . He came second in the 500 World Championship that year , and won the title the following year . He won the Isle of Man Senior TT , came second in the Junior , with Norton first second and third in both races . In 1951 , Duke again won both Junior and Senior TTs , and there were nine Nortons in the first ten in the Senior TT . The Featherbed legend had begun .
