at Brooklands as is often claimed . Prior to this a written guarantee came with the SS80 , claiming the bike had been timed at 80mph ( 129km / h ). A new SS100 was launched in 1933 claiming 74bhp at 6200rpm with a top speed of 125mph ( 200km / h ). One critic thought that even if 74bhp was an exaggeration , this performance would still have been impressive fifty years later . One of the many achievements of the 1927 Brough Superior SS100 was to beat Sir
Malcolm Campbell ’ s supercharged Sunbeam at the Brighton speed trials in 1932 . Brough Superior ’ s sporting records include 1924 , 1929 , 1936 , and 1937 world speed records . It seems that the very structure of the Brough Superior made it less suitable for road racing , although it was raced with some success . It was , however , sprints and speed record events where it was , as its name suggests , superior .
