Arriving home slightly worse for wear thanks to the plank Honda calls a seat I had a few takeaways from the weekend : Nothing beats a good night ’ s rest before a big day in the saddle . A pie is a great breakfast option on a ride day . An R100GS rider can give your low power bike a push along the Desert Road to help you try maintain the speed limit , but the GS rider will soon get bored and take off at pace . If you haven ’ t joined a GS Rallye it is well worth it . The GS community is one of the friendliest I ’ ve come across . And , as they say on the flier , all bikes are welcome ... and you ’ re certainly made to feel that way . Come along to the next one and see for yourself .
RAY HERON ’ S RALLYE When I was asked if I wanted to attend the 2020 GS Rallye in Martinborough on a borrowed G310GS , my response was “ hell yeah !”
Having never attempted a navigational Rallye before , I wasn ’ t really quite sure what I was getting myself into . I ’ d never used an old school route sheet before and the only GPS I had was my iPhone . However , I thought with around 160 riders signed up to the event , what was the worst that could happen ? Fast forward to the Friday afternoon before the event and adventure riders from all over New Zealand began to converge on the Martinborough Rugby Clubrooms for sign on . Beers , banter and some lies flowed over dinner and on into the evening . Saturday morning , I was up early and keen to get going . I teamed up with Mat on his Honda Rally , Ben astride Vege ’ s BMW R100GS and Doug on his newly acquired Honda Africa Twin . Knowing we had at least three GPS units and two lots of route sheets between us , I was able to relax and go with the flow . It ’ s quite the experience knowing someone has done all
