‘ R ’ Is FOR ROADSt ER

Compact and economical yet with a brisk turn of performance , BMW ’ s G310R is a little beauty .

T he micro roadster in the BMW lineup is sitting accusingly outside my front door – somewhat unloved . It ’ s raining – when does it not , in drought-ravaged , flooded Auckland , in what is arguably the maddest year in world history ? Everything is going wrong . We ’ ve been through two bouts of lockdown in Auckland ; Covid19 has ravaged the city and its businesses , while the rest of NZ has come out sputtering along . Australia ships their worst offenders here , in a crude , bastardised replay of their own founding – a populace of ‘ criminals ’ shipped out from Britain . America seemed to be entering a vicious race war , with Trump increasingly portraying a cosplay character , Jabba the Hut , with his own daughter as Princess Leia . Jeffrey Epstein , the global child procurer , groomer and rapist “ commited suicide ”, Prince Andrew went into hiding , Britain and Europe have had an acrimonious divorce , while Boris bombasts about like a blonde , woolly bladder , and everyone else is sick , with a largely unchecked global pandemic . A brutal Australian lunatic shot 51 Christchurch people dead , and wounded many others , and is now behind bars at a cost nearing a billion dollars to keep him alive and safe . Hell of a year . Plus the rain . ‘ Interesting times ’, as that colloquial proverb purportedly has it . It hardly seems like the right time to review something as trivial as a motorcycle , and yet , perhaps , it really is . Maybe even the perfect time .
